How the Monster Changed the Face of African
Dancehall Music: Obviously, Charles Nii Armah Mensah popularly known as Shatta wale(shatta movement) is probably the most hated man in Ghana’s music industry. Despite his achievements both in Ghana and beyond, his critics’ claim, he does not possess the traits to be an international superstar.
They fail to recognize Shatta Wale as a dancehall act, stating he sings “Jama” songs - a popular genre nationwide that mostly comprises a catchy hook and a dance-able rhythm. When he drops a joint, critics tagged his song as intangible, and only good for local consumption. Unknown to his critics, the infamous dancehall star was cooking an infectious joint, and in no time, he released “Gringo”, through a stunning motion picture that got many jaws dropped; even Nigeria’s Olamide and South African rapper, Nasty C SA, gave thumbs up to “Gringo” with a retweet.
The music video was set in an 1885 cowboy town, where a foreigner gunslinger, El Shatta, took out feared villain, Snake Eye in a fast draw. Shatta Wale’s first single, “Gringo” off his upcoming album #TheReign got social media talking, to the extent that his critics claim his usage of the term “Gringo” does not fit the concept of the song.
According to its origination, “Gringo” was used inoffensively by Hispanic/Spanish people to refer to foreigners, in the past, white people of American & European decent. However, due to evolution of demographics, regardless of your ethnicity, some Portuguese speaking and Latino countries tag any foreigner as a “Gringo”; even people who are not in touch with their Latino roots are called, “Gringo”. Well, by far, Shatta Wale’s “Gringo”, is one the ‘baddest’ African dancehall joints we have come across; also it appears Wale has raised the bar with an epic visual stunner that won’t be forgotten. Hate it or love it, “Gringo”, is dope!!! #
